Sustainable Scandinavian Meetings Region.
“Driven by a commitment to the transformation of the meetings industry towards sustainability, organisations from the five countries of the ICCA Scandinavian Chapter began a unique collaborative project to create a Sustainable Scandinavian Meetings Region.
The journey so far
The project started in Gothenburg in March 2010 with a workshop to discuss the importance and need for greater sustainability in the meetings industry. The participants decided there was a need and opportunity to create a sustainable meetings region. In March 2011, in Reykjavik, ICCA members reconvened and decided that a formal agreement was required to secure member commitment to undertake actions, and to improve sustainability performance. The members also felt that a research project needed to be started to understand current performance and share best practice. In March 2012, in Tampere, members again reconvened to sign the Scandinavian sustainable Meetings Accord and to launch the Scandinavian Destination Sustainability Index.
Update: The first benchmarking workshop was held during this year’s conference in Aarhus, where the 2013 Index was also released. Most sustainable destinations were Uppsala and Gothenburg and the most improved destination was Turku with an astounding 81% improvement. 20 destinations across the Nordic region are now benchmarking and sharing knowledge on sustainability in the meetings industry. This is an increase from the 16 destinations from the first index and a sign that the Scandinavian chapter is even more aware of the benefits that the cross country collaboration brings.
Scandinavian Sustainable Meetings Accord
Over 50 chapter member organisations including Convention and Visitor Bureaus, Destination Marketing Organizations, Venues and Agencies have signed the Scandinavia Sustainable Meetings Accord. The Accord outlines 10 specific actions, which all signatories commit to, in order to advance sustainable development within the meetings and events industry.

Scandinavian Destination Sustainability Index
20 cities across the chapters five 5 countries, have measured and provided data in order to assessing and reporting on the sustainability performance of Scandinavia’s major meetings destinations.
The 2013 Index which can be downloaded here, uses 16 performance indicators to measure and benchmark the sustainability commitment and performance of the city government and the destination infrastructure (recycling, renewable energy etc), and the sustainability commitment and performance of the local meetings industry.
This the second Scandinavian Destination Sustainability Index demonstrates an annual improvement of 11% over 2012, and highlights that the Scandinavian destinations are advancing towards our common goal of creating the world first sustainable meetings region.

This, the second Index is a fine example of Scandinavian leadership and collaboration in action. It serves as a beacon to other chapters.
